Dreaming frequently about dead relatives can feel unsettling, mysterious, or even comforting depending on the nature of the dreams. Spiritually, especially from a Christian biblical perspective, it's important to respond with discernment, faith, and wisdom from God’s Word rather than fear or superstition.
How to Respond
Spiritually When You Dream About Dead Relatives
"Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see
whether they are from God…" — 1 John 4:1
1. Understand That Dreams Can Come
from Different Sources
The Bible shows that dreams can have three sources:
- From God (e.g., Joseph's dreams in
Genesis 37 or Matthew 1–2)
- From your soul (Ecclesiastes 5:3 – “A dream
comes through much activity”)
- From demonic influence (Deuteronomy 13:1–5 – false
dreams leading people astray)
So not every dream is spiritual or demonic. Some are just reflections
of thoughts, emotions, grief, or memories.
Ask yourself: Am I still grieving? Am I still emotionally attached? Your soul
can replay unresolved emotions at night.
2. Pray for Discernment
Ask God to reveal the meaning (if any). A sincere prayer can help:
“Lord, if this dream carries a message, reveal it to me through Your
Word. If it is not of You, I reject it. Help me walk in truth and not
confusion.”
Use James 1:5: “If anyone lacks wisdom, let him ask of God…”
3. Never Try to Communicate with the
Dead
"There shall not be found among you... one who calls up the
dead." — Deuteronomy 18:10-12
The Bible forbids any form of necromancy or speaking to the dead.
Dead relatives don’t “visit” the living. Scripture is clear:
- Luke 16:19–31 — There is a fixed gulf between
the dead and the living.
- Hebrews 9:27 — After death comes judgment.
Dreams are not a biblical channel for the dead to communicate. So we must
not entertain or follow any “messages” from them.
4. Guard Your Heart and Mind
If these dreams trouble you or repeat constantly, don’t obsess
over them.
“Cast down imaginations and every high thing that exalts itself against
the knowledge of God…” — 2 Corinthians 10:5
Pray before bed. Read Scripture. Play worship music. Set a spiritual
atmosphere.
5. Speak the Blood of Jesus Over Your
Mind
If the dreams are tormenting, recurring, or feel demonic, then
apply spiritual warfare:
- Rebuke the dream: “I reject this in Jesus’
name. My sleep is blessed.”
- Plead the Blood: Revelation 12:11 — “They
overcame him by the blood…”
- Declare peace: “The Lord gives His beloved
sleep” — Psalm 127:2
6. Let Go of Unresolved Emotions
Sometimes dreams about dead relatives come from grief that is still
active, guilt, or unspoken words.
Bring closure:
- Write a letter to God about your
grief
- Forgive the person if there were
offenses
- Thank God for their life and
release them
Jesus said in Matthew 5:4, “Blessed are those who mourn, for
they shall be comforted.” Accept God's comfort.
7. Ask God What He Wants You to Learn
Sometimes, dreaming of a relative may remind you of a spiritual legacy:
- A praying mother? Maybe God is
calling you to intercede.
- A godly grandfather? Maybe it's
about walking in his discipline.
- A family pattern? Maybe you're
being shown what to break.
Ask: “Lord, is there anything in my family line You want to heal,
bless, or correct?”
Is it a sin to dream about the dead?
No. Dreaming itself is not a sin. But acting on the dream by trying to
speak with the dead or trusting the dream more than Scripture can open
spiritual doors you don't want opened.
Why do I keep seeing the same dead
person in my dreams?
This may indicate an unresolved issue in your soul, or a spiritual
attack. If the person’s appearance stirs fear, anxiety, or confusion, rebuke it
in Jesus' name. If it reminds you of legacy or purpose, ask God what He’s
teaching.
Can God use dreams of the dead?
God can use any experience to teach or warn us, but He never violates
Scripture. He may use the memory of a person—not their spirit—to guide
or caution you. But He won’t use the dead to speak directly.
