The Early Commandment: Understanding Its Role in Christian Faith

God started the creation by issuing orders and commandments, He also ordered men to be fruitful and so on, He told Adam all to eat and what not to eat; generation after generation He gave commandments and instructions for men to obey. The children of Israel at the point of exit from Egypt also got commandments and that is what I call early commandment, today. At a point God had to come and make clarity of His commandment, letting them know what He commanded their fathers and what they were focusing on.

Jer.7:22-23 “For I did not speak to your fathers, or command them in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, concerning burnt offerings or sacrifices. But this is what I commanded them, saying, ‘Obey My voice, and I will be your God, and you shall be My people. And walk in all the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be well with you.’”

Like the children of Israel of those days, many of us today act as if God gave us commandment to offer Him sacrifice, we enjoy doing atonements-like things than obeying, we do some things that look like we are trying to bribe God at the expense of obedience to His voice. When God delivered you and set you up on high, He gave you some instructions (commandments), He told you how you will serve Him, and sometimes we are even the one that told Him what and what we will do for Him.

And now that you are up there, have you not changed the commandment to that one that will be easy to do? Some have it that they should preach the word to their neighbours at home and office (not to even go out), but now they are saying their money can go if they cannot go. That is how we choose the convenience for His commandment, do a check this morning; that which is comfortable for you to do for God, is that the early commandment, or your chosen commandment?

Sacrifice (put yours) is good but is that what He commanded you to do?

Prayer: Father, I ask for grace to revisit our initial agreement for me to execute my part, not as I command but as you commanded me in the early commandment for obedience, help me Lord I pray in Jesus name. Amen!
